About Fort Saskatchewan

Welcome to the beautiful city of Fort Saskatchewan. Nestled along the North Saskatchewan River in Alberta just 25 km northeast of Edmonton, this midsize city of about 25,000 residents was founded as a Northwest mounted police Fort, and later home to a large provincial gaol (a prison facility) with a history in law and order. The original fort was located across the river from Lamoureaux. It's bordered by Strathcona County to the south and east, Sturgeon County to the north and west, and Edmonton to the southwest. It's mostly known for its petrochemical facilities including Dow Chemical, Sherritt International, and Shell Canada. On the flipside of industry, it's also known for a flock of 50 sheep that roam the Fort Heritage Precinct throughout the summer months. Naturally, the city mascot is a sheep named Auggie. You can imagine there is a fine line between commercial industry and traditional charm.

Fort Saskatchewan Things to Do

There are plenty of things to see, do and experience while living in Fort Saskatchewan. Located along Highway 21 and Highway 15 just southeast of the North Saskatchewan River, Fort Saskatchewan offers a wide range of recreational and outdoor entertainment and activities. From River activities to the Shell Theater, River Valley, a major source of pride for our area with an extensive trail system, boat launch, and fishing pond, multiple markets and arenas, there's never a lack of things to do in Fort Saskatchewan.

Speaking of markets, there are three major markets put on by the Chamber of Commerce each year including the Christmas marketplace, downtown market Saturdays in July and August and Farmers Market at Legacy Park every Thursday in June through September.

The city of Fort Saskatchewan maintains three indoor artificial ice strengths and five outdoor natural ice rinks during the winter season. And with multiple festivals each year including the Sheep Leaving Parade (yes, that's really a thing), Family Festival, Deadwood Festival, Enchanted Forest, Canada Day and more, it's easy to see why people have chosen Fort Saskatchewan as their primary destination.

Fort Saskatchewan also has some excellent schools with a reputation for higher graduation rates and lower class sizes.

Naturally, there's a plethora of real estate available but typically homes don't last long on the market. Our primary buying and selling season is typically June through October but you're likely to see anywhere from about 100 to 130 properties for sale at any given time. The average home price is about $350,000 with a yearly change of about 3% to 10%. Being just 25 km from Edmonton means you're no further than 30 to 45 minutes to the big city with the Edmonton Mall, shops, restaurants, and more. It's easy to see why people have chosen to live in Fort Saskatchewan.
